However, in the process of hunting this down, I found something else. I've had intermittent connection problems. Sometimes I could get some internet pages and not other...troubleshoot identified a dns problem and said there was no problem with my configuration. Well, when I was checking device manager for the cd problem, I notice intermittently that I lost internet access and the network cards were flagged...when I checked those out I found all of them had Avira drivers...I use Avira suite for firewall,antivirus etc. So I completely uninstalled Avira, cleaned out the temp files and registry and reboot...now I have no problems at all with connectivity and pages (dns). So I guess all problems have a silver lining....AVIRA is NOT compatible with Windows RC. (it seems more intermittent in the beta version but is real bad in 7). Now I will also check my Vista 64 for the same kind of problems.
Anyway, I am now back to my one and only problems: the cd still is not recognized. I guess I have no choice but to do another clean install.
