I'm going to thank this and this for most of the methods that I'm going to explain in this thread.

So you have a list of books you need to buy for college. There are some really great resources for finding them online, but I'm going to run through the easiest methods for searching all of them here.

First, let's start off by using the method that will allow you to find the vast majority of books. Google. It tends to be easier if you can search multiple sites at once, and this is the easiest way to do it.

There was a search engine that /u/ratokursi made 3 years ago, but by now most of the sites are either dead or have changed the url. I decided to make a new one, this time after reviewing 100+ sites and adding to working ones to the custom search engine.

Also search on Library Genesis since it's not showing up in the search results for some odd reason.

This should be able to find most of your books. Unfortunately, not every book ever published is going to be on the internet.

Trying 'ext:pdf (title of book)' into Google might also yield some results, just be careful what you click on.

So, in order to find the ones you can't find, there a few other ways to find them.

You can download ebooks via irc. The easiest way to search is on a search engine, like this one: https://ixirc.com/. Then follow the last part of /u/ManWithoutModem's post:

If you don't know how to use IRC to download books, check out this link or read this:

You obviously need an IRC client installed, a quick google search should find you a bunch of decent free ones.

Load the client and then type:

/server irc.irchighway.net

This will connect you to the irchighway server. Once you're on there, type:

/join #ebooks

This will take you into the ebooks channel, which has more than 2.2Terabytes of ebooks for free download. Once you're in, all you have to do to find what you want is to simply type:

@search 'Author or book title'

... removing the inverted commas.

You'll get a message saying that your search has been accepted. A few seconds later a searchbot will offer you a file, so accept the download. That will send you a .txt file that's zipped. Extract that and you'll get a list of files. I searched for Lian Hearn and got a list of 147 files. Here's an extract from it:

Say I wanted to download the first book. I'd copy the text shown below, deliberately removing the file size information (I've been booted for that before ):

Then just paste that into the IRC window then press enter. After 2-3 seconds you get a prompt asking you to accept or decline the file.You know how to do the rest.

There are private torrent trackers that require either registration or an invite from someone else already on the site in order to join. Some examples include FreeTheTextbooks (Open Signup), My Anonamouse, BitSpyder, BitMe, and Bibliotik.

It's not advisable to try to gain access to one for just a few textbooks seeing as most require some sort of effort to look for something that may or may not be there. (FreeTheTextbooks might be worth it as it's open signup).

By now you're probably not going to find the book online. However, you still have many options. You can rent it from Chegg, get it used from Biblio.com, or DeDRM it after getting it on Amazon.

Chegg is a site where you can rent or buy used textbooks and also read some of the online. There should be a way to extract the text from the page content, hopefully /u/molotoviphone can elaborate on this. It's really good way to get the book saved outside of the rental period.

Biblio.com is a service similar to Chegg, except without the online feature.

Amazon is (as you probably already know) a site where you can buy new and used textbooks and also rent or buy digital kindle versions but they're encumbered with DRM. The rented version normally comes in a .azw4 file format, and the purchased version usually comes in a .mobi file format. These are probably both DRM-Protected.

In order to remove the DRM, you will need Calibre, some modified DeDRM Tools, and KindleUnpack.

This will allow you to remove the DRM on all azw4 and mobi files while removing your account name from the metadata.

Install calibre and install the DeDRM Plugin and KindleUnpack along with it. Then you can drag the .azw4 or .mobi files into Calibre and it will DeDRM it. Select the book, click the KindleUnpack icon, and select 'Extract PDF'.

At this point, you have no use for the DRMed copy of the book, so you can return it if you wish, and essentially get the book for free, or you can do whatever else you want with the book.

If all else fails, or you need some kind of online access code, your only choice is to buy the physical copy of the book or the online key.

Since sharing is caring, you should try to do your best to share the DeDRMed version of the ebook if you got it from Amazon or when you're done with the physical book, scan it before reselling it, and upload it so that it will be easier for other people to find the book. Some good places to do so are Library Genesis and any subreddit in This Multireddit.

Hopefully this will help you find most of your textbooks that you need for your classes and allow you to study without having to give even more money to the publishers who are trying to take advantage of our situation.

Edit: I understand that all of us need to find textbooks, but please go through all the methods listed here, and if you can't find it, there's a 99% chance that no one else can find it either. If it's possible, go ahead and buy it, DeDRM it from Amazon, and then return it.

Great book for people who have never encountered a case interview before. This is the book for all the basics that you can build on. However, be wary of forcing all cases into the 12 frameworks they provided. Most cases don't fit nicely into these packages and the book does not cover Private Equity cases.

Almost useless. I am stunned by the incredible lack of clarity for a book whose sole purpose is to prepare you to lay out your thinking in the most clear way during a case interview.
The Ivy Case System is pointless. There is no learning involved, it is only memorization of 12 case types and the follow up questions for each. Once you have done that, it is admitted that cases almost NEVER fall into only one type so you are back to just thinking through each situation logically as if you had never...more

For being one of the most popular case books, I found this book less useful than expected. The one thing that I will say it does have going for it is that it’s a quick read. If you are completely unfamiliar with what a case interview is, it may be a good introduction and overview to general approaches that can be taken to address cases. This is all I read for McK interview prep.

Good introduction and beginning guide for aspiring consultants. Provides a good baseline and proper advice for developing true case study skills.

The book presents a good starting point to practice case interviews useful to land a consulting job.
The reason for the 4 stars rating is that, from my point of view, the cases are not challenging and complex enough.
Note: to maximize the potential of this book, you should have a partner that is able to be the interviewer.

Another nice introductory book for case interview preparation. Just like Cheng's Case interview secret minus the constant reminder to buy the course. I really love the chapter about estimation, I could grasp it better than from Cheng's. Also contain various examples of interview. This book is great, it would be even better to practice this with a partner for more realistic experience.

Great starter for those, who would like to find out more about case interviews and the mental tools that could help to solve puzzles related to diversified business situations. What could be improved is the consistency between 20 cases to read at the end and the methodology presented at the beginning of the book.

Read Case Interview Secrets by Victor Cheng instead. This books multiple frameworks make it incredibly difficult to prepare for a real interview. Definitely take good notes on the multiple questions that you are encouraged to ask within - these are definitely useful.

A good start for fresh graduates who wants to start a career in Management Consulting.

While the book is written for case interview prep, it’s a great resource for anyone thinking through business strategy generally.

Decent guide for complete case prep newbies, but loses usefulness after the first 3-4 cases.
Cosentino's example cases are in the form of a pre-written dialogue, which means loss in usefulness comes from 2 areas:
1) The dialogue NEVER asks the interviewee to structure issues or walk through their issue structure (at least from what I remember).
2) Your case partner is probably not going to walk through issues in the same pre-formatted way that the in-book interviewee does.

Very well written, but needs more emphasis on how to apply the teachings and how to come up with structures when in a case interview as opposed to simply being asked to memorize the preconceived structures suggested by the author.

Didn't finish the book, as I moved on to Victor Cheng's Look Over My Shoulder audio series. This book was great for learning estimation questions, though I found the number of frameworks not as helpful for going through other types of cases.

Great book! It really helps you develop the tools and the mindset required to confidently respond to case interviews and other everyday mind challenging issues.

A must read for anyone who wants to broaden their business sense or prepare for a product type interview. Might even be quite helpful in some technical interviews at larger companies.

An excellent resource for case interview preparation. I found the Kindle version frustrating however, as the book contains tables and sample cases that don't suit the Kindle format.
