Legaia 2: Duel Saga is the first PS2 entry in the series, and acts as sequel to a very popular title on the original PlayStation. In Duel Saga, you steer your hero through a quest to retrieve the stolen Aqualith'a stone that supplies water to your village. Fighting is the main focus here, and the tactical system is based on Arts'fighting combinations that you discover over time. As you gain experience, the number of 'art blocks? in your attack mode increases, allowing you to make multiple moves during your turn. (Yes, fighting here is turn-based, which takes a little getting used to if you are used to a real-time fighting mode.)
Graphically, the best moments come in the attack animations, which are very smooth and quite impressive. Unfortunately, some of the backgrounds and regular character animations are a tad old-school and a bit low-poly for the mighty PS2.
Two major things keep Legaia 2 from being a Recommended Buy: the heavy emphasis on fighting, and the long, long cut scenes. The game has some nice RPG elements, such as the ability to combine raw materials with basic items to form better items. But you literally cannot run more than ten paces on a map without encountering a foe. Since you can't see enemies until you run into them, you can't even run away without stepping through menus to do it, making exploration frustrating at times. It is also easy to get lost since there's no in-game level map. Finally, the cut scenes I mentioned can run up to 15 minutes, while you sit waiting to play, or'more importantly'save. The net effect is that the RPG elements, which were obviously planned carefully, are lost in the mix.
Legaia 2 does have a lot of redeeming qualities, and I recommend it to fans of the genre. But the minuses here keep me from recommending it to everyone.

Legaia 2: Duel Saga, known as Legaia: Duel Saga (レガイア デュエルサーガ) in Japan, is a PlayStation 2action role-playing game and a sequel to Legend of Legaia, developed by Prokion. It was released in Japan, and in North America and Europe by Fresh Games.[1]

Gameplay[edit]
The player controls each characters and only three for the battle screen, while others cannot replace the leading one. The player can learn about their memories and make nicknames. For the campfire, the player can mix each meal recipes, and required materials to increase status on characters for skills. A few mini games included the casino, guild quests, rice planting, side-jumping and special battles. The player can use four button commands for the 'Tactical Arts System'. Combining each from three to seven blocks sometimes unlock Arts, which are available between on the battle and menu screen. The max limited number of each blocks is increased after leveling up. Starting from five blocks for each characters, the player can link with arts in each blocks from hyper to normal or super ones. Mystic Arts uses seven blocks, 100 AP and MP, with low HP. Variable Arts uses six blocks and 80 AP for two characters to defeat one enemy. The player can use the power of spirits, costing MP to shortly increase status, recover health, and defeat one or all enemies.

Setting[edit]
The game follows a group of outcasts (Mystic) and natural spirits (Origin), siding to fight each other between evil and good. They were created by the Source Forge, the world's creation located inside Demiurge Tower, along with three magical stones. When they are scattered, the creation is imbalanced for the apocalypse. In the town of Kravia, the outcasts appeared and went on a rampage. Under the sewers of Darakin connects to the underground kingdom of Kabel.

The main protagonist is Lang, the village swordsman. His allies include Maya, an orphaned magician regaining to control her powers, martial arts teacher Kazan, female pirate captain Sharon Blade and spiritual giant Ayne. The main villain is Avalon, a star shaper who blames the people for killing the outcasts. He works with the sorceress Velna, swordsman Rauss, royal bishop Doplin, and foster siblings Elliot and Marienne.

After retrieving the stones, the heroes place it back to the creation in order to save the world.

The game received an average score of 70.46% at GameRankings based on an aggregate of 40 reviews,[2] 67/100 at Metacritic for 21 reviews,[3] and was less successful than the predecessor. According to Famitsu sales information, the game sold 40,302 during its debut week in Japan, ranking sixth among all new releases for the period.[4] It barely made it into Dengeki Online's top 200 best-selling games of 2001 with 53,808 copies.[5]
